Exterior Painting
Do not under estimate your ability, take the paint brush this summer and get out there and paint your home. For years I was tempted to pay someone to do the job but after getting their estimates, I decided real quick to do it yourself. If you have vinyl siding painting window trim and doors will give you the opportunity to be creative. You can design the color scheme using colors that complement your home exterior siding. Below I will give some hints on how to your project.
Time required to complete vary on your skill level, size of your home, how much help you have and how many coats you apply. Beginners should take about eight to 10 hours of intermediates will take about seven to eight hours of Advanced will take about 6-7 hours. When painting trim, always use a higher sheen than the exterior siding to help them stand out. Semi-gloss or gloss for windows, doors and trim will look best on flat exterior. Remember, oil-based paint may have restrictions on local government check to see if there are restrictions on using oil-based paint in your area. And always avoid breathing the smoke of oil-based paints for long periods of time. Materials you need is a good trim brush, tape, paint buckets, ladders, drop cloths, mineral spirits to clean, paint and stir sticks
.
Note, you can customize with a coat of latex primer latex and oil-based primer coat with oil-based and it is possible to apply a fresh coat of latex over oil-based coats longer if you sand the surface first, or use a dulling chemical agents. Tip helps is to mask off areas that will not be painted, such as walls, or under the surface of the patio fence. For windows, mask offs the glass in each pane when painting the divisor. If you do not take the time to mask off areas not being painted you will spend hours cleaning the mess. It is obvious, but worth mentioning, never paints when it rains. If the surface is wet let it dry for 2-3 days.
Always apply the primer coat to areas of bare wood; this includes new construction, repair areas, or areas where you have to remove the paint. Nylon and polyester fur brushes work best with latex paints. Natural feather works best with oil. One thing that bother me the most growing hair in my pants, so to remove the hair off of a new brush before you start painting with it. Try not to paint in direct sunlight will cause the paint from drying too fast. Always wait for the number of hours before applying second coat of paint. Usually eight hours will allow time for the first layer dry. And remember the two mantle layers are usually preferred over one for all-out protection. This can be a fun project for the whole family, so get out there and finish it. Good luck with your project.
